Orla’s Junior Infants

Junior Infants have been learning all about dinosaurs. We had a special dinosaur day where we worked in groups on dinosaur projects, we made and painted dinosaurs for Art, read a story about a dinosaur and solved dinosaur clues on a dinosaur treasure hunt. We showed our projects to the whole school at assembly and performed our Tyrannosaurus rap.

We were  particularly happy when the last clue on our Treasure hunt said our prize for solving the dinosaur hunt was playtime in our new school playground. We had great fun and look forward to lots more playtime in our wonderful new school playground.

Junior Infants got creative with Fiona from Recreate Art. We had a workshop learning about recyclable materials and using them imaginatively to create different objects. We created some very imaginative pieces.

Junior Infants loved Seachtain na Gaeilge. It was a great experience to participate in the Tráth na gceist, Table quiz with the older children. We had great fun at the ceilí in the halla performing all our ceilí dances.

Junior Infants have opened a restaurant for Aistear for the month of January. We are having lots of fun pretending to be waiters, customers and chefs in our roleplay area. We have designed wonderful menus at our art station and have been getting very imaginative making playdough food and playing with our small world characters. We have also learned all about healthy foods and are really enjoying eating fruit and vegetables for the Food dudes.

Junior Infants won ‘An Líne is fearr’, an award for the best class line and as a reward ventured on a trip to the playground with First Class. We had lots of fun!

We are really enjoying Yoga and Mindfulness activities this week for Well-being week. There are lots of Random acts of Kindness happening in the class and kind words being shared.

We have been learning about patterns in Maths and experimenting with oil, water and food colouring to create lava lamps in Science.

Winter has been very busy so far in Junior Infants. We learned all about winter weather and painted winter landscapes.

It was lovely to get to experience some snow on Friday after learning all about winter weather. We went out with Aisling’s class for some playtime in the snow.

Junior Infants really enjoyed the school Hallowe’en celebrations. We all looked great in our Hallowe’en costumes. We played traditional Hallowe’en games and had a spooky boogie with Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class in the halla.

Junior Infants celebrated Maths Week and enjoyed lots of Maths games and activities. We played matching and sorting games on the I-pads, we made shapes and played matching card games. We have been looking out for numbers and shapes all around us. We really enjoyed using our Maths eyes finding shapes and counting on a Maths trail around the school. Thanks to Andrew’s Fourth class for helping us with our Maths trail!

Junior Infants celebrated National Tree Day on Thursday 5th October. We went on a nature trail in the school grounds and collected fallen leaves and acorns. We are very lucky to have lovely oak trees growing in our school grounds. We learned all about the parts of  a tree and made leaf prints with the collected leaves.

Junior Infants have really enjoyed making our own timelines for History. We loved showing each other our baby photos and sorting objects into things we used when we were babies and things we use now.

We really enjoy getting up and dancing for a movement break during the day.

We say nursery rhymes and sing songs everyday. We particularly enjoyed singing and acting out ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and ‘Five Green and speckled frogs’. We then painted them for art.

We have had a fun start to Junior Infants. Everyone has been working hard at learning the sounds – s, a and t. We have been working in groups for our morning activities with lego, pegboards, cutting, jigsaws and threading. Our Aistear theme this month is ‘School’ and we have had lots of fun with the roleplay area, construction area, art box, playdough station and small world activities.

Toyday on Friday is a lot of fun! We are very good at listening to each other as we do ‘Show and Tell’ and have all been very kind sharing our toys.
